Leonardo DiCaprio explained why Jonah Hill was hired on the spot for The Wolf of Wall Street

A lot of fans think Jonah Hill was born to play Leonardo DiCaprio’s bumbling sidekick in The Wolf of Wall Street – and so did he.

The actor, 41, starred as stockbroker Donnie Azoff in Martin Scorsese’s debauchery-drenched 2013 flick, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

Even though he was only paid £48,000 for the film, Hill knew he was ‘destined’ to get the part before he’d even auditioned for it.

When the project was still a pipe dream of Scorsese’s, the actor got wind that casting had began and decided to ambush DiCaprio, 50, with a list of reasons as to why he deserved a seat at the table.

According to Hill, he presented an ‘impassioned argument’ to his future co-star about why he deserved to play Azoff.

In a conversation reminiscent of the iconic ‘sell me this pen‘ scene in The Wolf of Wall Street, Hill wowed the Hollywood heavyweight with his pitch.

During a Q&A panel following the film‘s release at the Produced By Conference in Los Angeles, DiCaprio revealed how Scorsese then ended up hiring the comedy star ‘on the spot’.

The Beach actor explained he had met up with Hill in Mexico, who quickly launched into a silver-tongued spiel about why he was the perfect person to play Azoff.

DiCaprio explained: “He basically said to me, ‘I know people like this. I know what these people represent in the culture, I’ve met people like this.

“‘And there is nobody on Earth that should play this character except for me. I’m the man for this job’. I said, ‘No, I hear you’.

“He’s like, ‘No, you don’t understand – this is my favourite script I have ever read in my life and I’m destined to play this’.”

And as they say, the rest is history…although Hill obviously did have to get over the hurdle of impressing Scorsese, 82, too.

But luckily, his A-list pal put in a good word for him.

DiCaprio continued: “I immediately called Marty and said, ‘There’s an actor out there that really feels like they’re the person for the job’.

“I think Marty met him a week later, and I heard it was one of the best meetings he’d ever had with an actor. [He] hired him kind of on the spot.”

The actor said that Hill actually ended up ‘setting the tone for the film’, adding: “He really is one of the most unbelievably talented improvisational actors I’ve ever gotten the opportunity to work with.

“He took scenes and directions that we never even thought possible.”

What a glittering commendation, eh? Hill’s power of persuasion really has no bounds.

Hill previously explained that armed with the ‘support’ of DiCaprio, he flew to New York to meet with filmmaker Scorsese.

“It was the first audition I had in six years and the first one back was nerve-wracking enough, but also for my hero was slightly more scary,” he said in 2014.

The Superbad star ended up being hospitalised due to the epic amount of fake cocaine he shovelled up his nose while starring as Azoff.

And despite insisting that he was born to play the part, Hill revealed that he didn’t actually like his character in The Wolf of Wall Street.

“I just didn’t like the way that Donnie treated people, that was the thing I had the hardest time with,” he said.

“There’s a scene with a goldfish where I throw a lit cigarette at this kid and make him cry and fire him and eat his goldfish and it’s really degrading.

“On the way home I would just be like, ‘Oh gosh, what did I do today?’ I would feel bad.”

But to lighten the load on his conscience, Hill did confront the real Jordan Belfort – who the film is based on – about whether he felt sympathy for his victims.

Real life Wolf of Wall Street Jordan Belfort has incredible 'sell me this pen' answer on the spot

There’s a right way and a wrong way to answer the question

The real Wolf of Wall Street – aka Jordan Belfort – had an immediate response when he was asked to ‘sell this pen’.

If you’ve watched the movie, you’ll know there are some iconic moments in the film, including when Jordan – played by Leonardo DiCaprio – asks Brad Bodnik (Jon Bernthal) to sell him a pen, only for him to respond with a flawless answer.

Turns out though, it’s not the response that the real Jordan Belfort would have given.

In the movie, Bodnik takes on the task by asking Belfort to write his name on a napkin, to which Belfort responds by explaining he doesn’t have a pen on him.

Of course, Bodnik then hands him the pen, explaining: “Supply and demand, my friend.”

In real life, the actual Jordan Belfort had a different response.

Appearing at the Oxford Union for a Q&A, Belfort was asked to ‘sell this pen’ by an audience member – and he knew exactly what to do.

“Let me tell you what that whole exercise really stands for, right,” he began.

“The whole ‘sell me this pen’ narrative is a test that you give to a salesman to see if they really understand what selling is all about.

“If you ask someone who’s not a professional salesman, who doesn’t have the right instincts, they’ll start actually trying to sell you a pen.

“‘This pen is great, this pen writes upside down, it’s the best value for its money, this pen will last forever.'”

Belfort explained there’s only one ‘rational’ way to answer the question, adding: “Here’s the thing, the only one rational thing you could do when someone says ‘sell me this pen’ and that is to start asking them questions.

“‘So tell me, how long have you been in the market for a pen? What type of pens have you used in the past? Is it business or personal? Do you buy expensive pens?’

“The key to selling is to find out, step one, what are your clients needs, values, what are they looking for? What do they need? You’ve got to fill that need.

“When you just go out and try to sell something to someone, what you’re saying is, ‘I don’t give a s**t about you, I’m just going to ram this down your throat.'”

The former stock broker is, of course, the subject of the legendary 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street, which was based on Belfort’s 2007 memoir.

It documents the American’s career working in New York City as well as the corruption and fraud of Wall Street.

Margot Robbie thought she was ‘going to stab’ Leonardo DiCaprio during that iconic scene in The Wolf of Wall Street.

The Martin Scorsese classic follows the real life story of millionaire stockbroker Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Meanwhile, Robbie featured in what would be her breakout role as Naomi Lapaglia, Belfort’s fictional second wife.

On-screen, we watch the pair endure a volatile relationship, highlighted in one of the most memorable scenes in the movie.

After Naomi catches Jordan cheating, as a punishment, she brilliantly seduces him while keeping him at arm’s length.

By placing her heel on his face, the alcohol and drug-fuelled financier is reminded how much he screwed up.

Though it got a big laugh at the cinemas, Robbie said she was seriously worried about stabbing him in the face.

In a 2023 interview with Vogue, she said: “I remember being really worried that I was going to stab Leo in the face.

“My first scene in the movie I’m wearing this vintage Herve Leger bandage dress.

“For Naomi, for this character it’s like her sexuality was her currency in this world — especially the effect she could have on Jordan was the way she could control and manipulate situations.

“So, what she wore was very much a part of that. Or what she didn’t wear.”

Previously, Robbie shared the embarrassing moment when DiCaprio’s e-cigarette got stuck in her butt crack.

Recalling the unusual sex scene, Robbie told The Talk in 2015: “I don’t know if he wants me telling this story, but we’d just finished this scene and Leo always carries an e-cigarette with him, like all the time.

“So he hid it under a pillow while we were shooting.

“Afterwards…he’s like, ‘Where is it? Where did I put it? I had it right here’.

“I was looking around with him – both still sitting in this bed – and then I went, ‘Oh, um, it’s literally, like, in my butt crack. I’m sitting on it. I am so sorry’.

“He probably threw it away. It was so embarrassing.

“So yeah, sex scenes are super sexy.”

Also referring to the shoot as ‘weird’ and ’embarrassing’, she told Porter magazine: “It doesn’t come across when you’re watching the movie, but in reality we’re in a tiny bedroom with 30 crew crammed in.

“For 17 hours I’m pretending to be touching myself.

“It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit.”

The Wolf of Wall Street is that chock-a-block with drama, drugs and deceit that it’s hard to remember every minute detail.

But as we all know, the legendary Martin Scorsese doesn’t just include stuff for the sake of it – each scene is carefully crafted and adds another piece to the puzzle of the plot.

However, he also let the stars of the 2013 film exercise some creative control over their performances, encouraging them to improvise and act on impulse – just like the real Jordan Belfort and his ex-wife Nadine Macaluso would have.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie portrayed the volatile couple in The Wolf of Wall Street, and it’s fair to say the pair of them absolutely aced it – which they both reckon is down to their willingness to go the extra mile.

We already know that Margot insisted on being starkers for that iconic scene where she turns up naked in the doorway, but I’ll bet you didn’t know that she helped orchestrate a ferocious scrap between her and her co-star.

While discussing some of the behind-the-scenes secrets which helped to make The Wolf of Wall Street such a good watch, the Barbie actor explained that her final scene in the film was actually put together at the eleventh hour.

As Jordan’s (DiCaprio) legal troubles mount, so does his reliance on drugs – and Naomi’s had it up to here with him.

He’s sliced the sofa in search of cocaine and she bursts in the room to give him a piece of her mind, as well as the news that she is divorcing him – and that he’ll never see their child again.

In one of the most emotional scenes in The Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan shoves past her and heads towards his daughter’s room, intent on fleeing with the youngster, but things turn violent when Naomi tries to stop him.

The stockbroker punches his wife in the stomach in his rage before grabbing their daughter and racing to his car, but as film fans will remember, he doesn’t get very far in his drug-addled state and crashes the car in the driveway.

Viewers would likely presume that Scorsese spent weeks stewing over this break-up scene – but according to Margot, they actually only came up with the idea the night before shooting it.

The 33-year-old explained: “Everyone is just so committed to making the best movie possible, that everyone just goes further and further with it.

“Marty [Scorsese] just lets you improvise for five minutes, do whatever you feel like doing. The last scene that Naomi is in, we completely made it up the night before shooting it.

“And it went from being conversation to kidnapping and drugs and punching each other and smashing windows.

“It just went in a whole different direction.”

Then again, we shouldn’t expect anything less from Margot – seen as though she booked The Wolf of Wall Street by slapping Leonardo in the face off the cuff during her audition.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, she previously explained that she came up with the move on the spot as she realised she needed to do something special to impress Scorsese.

The Aussie star said that she was aware her audition was nearly over and that it was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime chance’, so she pulled out the big guns.

She explained: “So I start screaming at him [Leonardo] and he’s yelling back at me. And he’s really scary. I can barely keep up. And he ends it saying, ‘You should be happy to have a husband like me. Now get over here and kiss me.’

“So I walk up really close to his face and then I’m like, ‘Maybe I should kiss him. When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?’

“But another part of my brain clicks and I just go, Whack! I hit him in the face. And then I scream, ‘F*** you!’

“And that’s not in the script at all. The room just went dead silent and I froze.”

Moral of the story – Margot’s hard as f*ck.

Margot Robbie reveals reason why she insisted on filming nude scene in Wolf of Wall Street

Joshua Nair

Margot Robbie has spoken about one of her most popular scenes from The Wall of Wall Street, clarifying why she wanted to do it nude.

The Australian actor’s breakout role was in the 2013 hit film, centred around stock broker Jordan Belfort’s rise and fall in the 1990s, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill.

Robbie plays Jordan Belfort’s (DiCaprio) wife, Naomi Lapaglia, real name Nadine Macaluso, in the title, who was married to Belfort for 14 years in real life.

In the film, we see the quick rise and fall of the relationship, mostly due to Belfort’s infidelity and drug use, but the actress shined in her scenes on screen.

One of them is the infamous nursery scene, where Robbie’s character punishes Belfort for cheating by not wearing any underwear around the house, though Macaluso has since refuted the claims that this happened.

Robbie revealed recently that there was meant to be more to the scene, where she was meant to use her heel to take her underwear off, something she described as ‘impossible’.

But now, in a fresh interview, she has once again touched on her famous full-frontal nude scene in the movie.

Speaking to Ben Makiewicz, as part of his Turner Classic Movies podcast Talking Pictures, she spoke about moving from an Australian soap in Neighbours to Hollywood, and how it was to star in and produce Barbie, among other things.

Robbie said that Scorsese, now 82, suggested that she could wear a robe in the seductive scene, where Lapaglia leads an already married Belfort up to her apartment.

The Academy Award nominee admitted though, that she turned the offer down, revealing: “(Scorsese) said, ‘Maybe you can be wearing a robe if you’re not comfortable.’ But that’s not what she would do in that scene.”

Despite being just 22 at the time, she went ahead with the choice to be nude, while previously admitting that she had ‘a couple shots of tequila’ before the scene as she felt ‘very nervous’.

Robbie further explained: “The whole point is that she’s going to come out completely naked – that’s the card she’s playing right now.”

The ultimate power move.

However, the bold moves didn’t start there, as she revealed on the podcast that she actually slapped DiCaprio in the audition, despite the script saying to kiss him.

Robbie recalled: “I thought, ‘I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome. I can’t wait to tell all of my friends this.’ And then I thought, ‘Nah.’ And just walloped him in the face.”

“It was dead silent for what felt like an eternity but was probably three seconds,

“(DiCaprio and Scorsese) just burst out laughing. Leo and Marty were laughing so hard. They said, ‘That was great,’” she said.

Robbie even thought she could be arrested for assault, and thought she’d hit him too hard, but it turned out to be the right move, as she got the part.
