Man who hacked the McDonald’s drive-thru radio explained hilarious prank he pulled on employee

Kevin Mitnick was a convicted hacker turned computer security consultant is best known for his arrest in 1995.

Throughout his life, the world-famous hacker was known for cloning phones to hide his location and copied proprietary software from some of the USA’s biggest cellular and computer companies.

He even dealt in the usual cyber crimes, stealing passwords, altering computer networks, and breaking into private emails.

Mitnick was eventually put behind bars for five years, after which we became a security consultant with his own company, a public speaker, and author.

The American hacker sadly passed away in July 2023, but shared a number of funny stories about his hacking days before going.

In one of them, he shared that he hacked a McDonald’s drive-thru of all places, when he was just 16 years old.

Labelling it as his ‘favourite hack’, he insisted that it wasn’t for a Big Mac or any free burger, but he would instead take over the radio system and speak to the customers and the server on the other end.

Parked further away, he would intercept the radio signal and toy with people.

“I would be able to take people’s order and communicate with the people and the guy inside the McDonald’s with a headset could only hear, because I had a more powerful signal,” he explained.

Mitnick went on: “(I would say) ‘you’re the 100th customer today please drive forward your order’s for free’, right we could see that the occupants were overweight (so I’d say) ‘take your order please’,” he said, before pulling the prank off.

He claimed that he would suggest a McSalad ‘based on the weight of occupants’ through the radio, and claimed that when police showed up, he would take it a step further.

Shouting through the radio, pretending he was a worker, he claimed to shout: “Hide the cocaine! Hide the cocaine!”

Obviously, this eventually caused an issue with the staff, causing the manager of this McDonald’s chain to come out and check it himself.

“We’re across the street, and then he walks up to the drive up window speaker and he actually bend over to look inside.

“Well, I couldn’t resist (I was) like ‘WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOOKING AT?’ looking at this guy fly back about ten feet.”

He highlighted that it was his favourite hack, despite the risk – this all happened before he was given jail time though.

A revolutionary prank for the time. It was the natural progression from prank calls, I guess.

Imagine seeing this while queueing up for your Big Mac…

A man journeyed to his local McDonald’s on horseback to test out whether or not he’d get served – and viewers are amazed by the response.

All of us have wondered at one point how far we could push it when it comes to getting food from a drive-thru, who remembers people threatening to walk or cycle through one during the Covid-19 lockdown? However one man decided to put this theory to the test.

Taking to TikTok, a horse rider who goes by the username @Iggythearab decided to test out whether or not he could pick up breakfast from his local McDonald’s while on horseback.

Recording the whole experience for our viewing pleasure, the Welsh user can be seen clopping up to the intercom on top of his Arabian horse named Iggy and ordering himself a ‘sausage, bacon and egg McMuffin’ alongside a packet of apple slices for his four-legged friend.

As onlookers can be seen pointing and staring at the horse in the background, the user repeats his order before galloping along to the payment window, where he reassures staff that Iggy is well behaved.

“He’s friendly, honestly, else I wouldn’t have brought him here,” he said.

After triumphantly collecting the goods, the pair gallop off into the car-park to enjoy their breakfast treat, as the rider can be heard saying: “Success, didn’t think they’d serve us.”

Naturally the video went viral – because how often do you see a horse at your local McDonald’s? – prompting many viewers to share their reactions in the comments.

“Good thinking not to include a drink – no cup holder,” one person joked, while a second added: “He’s such a good boy but all I could imagine was him taking a dump in the drive thru.”

“Love how none of the workers reacted,” a third noted.

Can you ride a horse through a McDonald’s drive-thru?

The clip also prompted viewers to speculate on what the rules were when it came to drive-thrus – and we have some bad news for you.

According to the McDonald’s website, only ‘motor cars, vans, trucks, mopeds, motorbikes and road-worthy mobility scooters’ are permitted to use the drive-thru.

“The health and safety of our customers and employees is our top priority and for this reason we are unable to serve pedestrians, bicycle riders, non road-worthy mobility scooters, horse riders or any horse-drawn vehicles through the Drive-thru lane,” the website added.

Despite official guidelines prohibiting horse travel, it would appear that Iggy isn’t the first to visit a drive-thru, showing that some branches may be more lenient when it comes to welcoming our four-legged friends.

The burger is made up of two beef patties, a slice of cheddar cheese, crispy and raw onions and lettuce before being topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce in a toasted bun.

Taking to social media, one person wrote: “This is one of the best burgers I have ever tasted, had a really nice kick to it too and peppercorn sauce is my fave – would definitely recommend it.”

Another added: “Definitely the nicest burger from McDonald’s ever.

“Serious combination of flavours. Love it.”

Say goodbye to the Steakhouse Stack.

McDonald’s

While a third commented: “Whoever Ronald McDonald employed to invent the steakhouse stack deserves the world.

“Steakhouse stack is probably the best burger you have ever released, the patties taste better, even without the peppercorn sauce it is by far the best tasting.

“But like everything good you take it away and leave the bland old menu the same.”

Here is the full list of items being removed:

  • Steakhouse Stack

Family of grandfather who tragically died after eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounder speaks out

Family of grandfather who tragically died after eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounder speaks out

The Colorado native died two days before health officials announced that they would investigate an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s

An 88-year-old grandfather tragically died after eating a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburger, with his family saying he ‘put his trust’ in the fast food chain.

Colorado native JC Smith made his way to McDonald’s a few weeks ago and ordered his favourite burger, before being admitted to hospital just days later, where health tests revealed that he had contracted the deadly bacterial infection of E.coli.

Experiencing symptoms such as dizziness and bloody diarrhoea, the elderly man was in hospital for four days before finding out.

Despite a health official speaking to the family to ask where JC had eaten before being admitted to hospital, the Smiths claim that they weren’t told to avoid any specific restaurants.

The grandfather returned to McDonald’s and once again ordered the Quarter Pounder and became more unwell, suffering with stomach pain that would cause him to violently move his arms and legs around.

His daughter, Debbie Bonnell, said to CBS: “All he wanted to do was enjoy a hamburger with his wife. He put his trust in these restaurants, and all we want is our dad back.”

Smith sadly passed away on 20 October, and health authorities would announce just two days later that the likely source of E.coli was the McDonald’s Quarter Pounder.

Bonnell further added: “We watched my daddy have excruciating pain for many days – thrashing his arms and legs around. It was very hard.

“I would hold his hand and pray and tell him to try and rest, ‘We are here with you’ and ‘We are getting help for you.'”

Both Smith and his wife had the Quarter Pounder, the difference being that she didn’t like onions (the likely source of the outbreak), later admitting to CBS: “I took mine off and gave mine to him. I feel guilty now because I gave him some onions.”

By 25 October, the fast food chain pinpointed Taylor Farms’ Colorado Springs facility was the ‘likely source of contamination’.

It has been reported that 90 people in 13 states have fallen sick following the E.coli outbreak, while 27 have been left hospitalised. Smith is the only death from the outbreak so far.

A 15-year-old girl developed serious kidney conditions, which could render her requiring treatment for the rest of her life.

McDonalds stated on 30 October: “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced they have now linked this outbreak, which appears to be contained, to slivered onions as the likely source.

“Due to McDonald’s swift action, they report the risk to the public continues to be very low and there have been no reported illnesses since McDonald’s took action to remove slivered onions.”

The burger is now back on the menu, and is being served in 700 restaurants without onions.

LADbible has contacted McDonald’s for a comment.
