There’s one clear winner for Cameron Diaz when it comes to her favorite movies to have starred in across her 20-plus years in the industry.
Cameron Diaz’s latest movie, Back in Action, is out on Netflix today (January 17) and sees the star return to her acting career after over a decade’s hiatus alongside Jamie Foxx.
The 52-year-old last starred in the 2014 musical release Annie, similarly alongside Foxx. The movie began shooting in 2013 and was released the following year, but it wasn’t until 2022 that Diaz was reported as beginning work on Back in Action.
The movie is now available to watch, bringing an end to fans’ 11-year wait and in honor of her return to the screen, Diaz has revealed her top five movies of her career for UNILAD RANKED.
5) Being John Malkovich (1999)
The fantasy comedy was written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze.
It sees Diaz star alongside John Cusack (Sixteen Candles) and Catherine Keener (Capote).
The film centers around unemployed puppeteer Craig Schwartz (Cusack) and his pet-obsessed wife Lotte (Diaz) who live in New York. After taking a temp role, Craig ends up stumbling upon a portal which leads into the mind of renowned actor John Malkovich and the chaos only descends from there.
Being John Malkovich has achieved an impressive Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 94 percent and Popcornmeter score of 87.
According to IMDB, Diaz looked so different when all dressed up in her costume that some crew members didn’t recognize her and thought she was a stranger when chatting with her.

4) Gangs of New York (2002)
Written by Jay Cocks, Steven Zaillian, and Kenneth Lonergan, this adaptation of Herbert Asbury’s 1927 novel was directed by none other than Martin Scorsese.
Diaz took on the mischievous role of Jenny Everdeane; a pickpocket and grifter whose wily ways end up attracting ‘Amsterdam’ (Leonardo DiCaprio), the son of the Dead Rabbits gang leader who was killed years earlier in a battle over territory.
Amsterdam returns to the Five Points area of the City to seek revenge against the man who killed his father, William ‘Bill the Butcher’ Cutting, played by Daniel Day-Lewis – whose nose got broken by DiCaprio while filming a fight scene in the film, IMDB notes, with Day-Lewis continuing filming the scene despite the injury.
As well as landing a place in Cameron’s top five movies, Gangs of New York has earned a Tomatometer score of 72 percent and Popcornmeter of 81.

3) Bad Teacher (2011)
Taking quite a turn from the violence set in New York, the 2011 movie Bad Teacher is a much more light-hearted tale as it features Diaz as, well, a bad teacher.
From writing duo Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, Bad Teacher was directed by Jake Kasdan and also stars Jason Segel (Shrinking), Justin Timberlake (Friends with Benefits) and Lucy Punch (Motherland), among others.
In the comedy, Diaz’s character is described as ‘lazy’ and ‘incompetent’; someone who certainly shouldn’t be in charge of the next generation, but who chooses to return to the job
after her wealthy fiancé dumps her – still wearing Christian Louboutin shoes of course, with IMDB reporting there was a contract between the designer himself and the movie producers to market them in the film.
The movie received harsh ratings from critics, earning a score of 45 percent on the Tomatometer and 36 percent on the Popcornmeter, but that didn’t impact Diaz’s fond memories of her time on set, telling UNILAD it was ‘really fun,’ cementing Bad Teacher’s position in the top three of her top five favorite films of her career.

2) The Mask (1994)
As hard as it might be to believe, it has, in fact, been over 30 years since director Chuck Russell teamed up with writers Michael Fallon, Mark Verheiden and Mike Werb to bring us the fantasy-comedy, The Mask.
At just 21 years old, The Mask was Diaz’s first movie, Russell previously telling Variety she ‘was the only person for the part as far as [he] was concerned after her first reading’.
“And then I saw the chemistry with her and Jim. Eight callbacks later, including improvs with Jim, I finally convinced producers,” he added.
The actor took on the role of Tina Carlyle, starring opposite the iconic Jim Carey (The Truman Show) as he plays bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss who finds himself transformed into a manic superhero when he puts on a mysterious, vividly green mask – who’d have guessed, eh?
Over three decades after its release, the movie remains a fan favorite with a Tomatometer score of 80 percent, and 68 percent on the Popcornmeter.

1) Charlie’s Angels (2000)
Sorry The Holiday fans, today isn’t your day. Fellow Shrek fans, I hear your cries. And how could My Sister’s Keeper not make the list? I also hear you scream. However, ultimately, for Diaz there’s no beating this icon.
When asked about the top film of her career, it was her 2000 action movie directed by McG, and written by Ryan Rowe, Ed Solomon and John August, that sprung to mind.
Diaz teamed up with her fellow angels, Drew Barrymore (Blended) and Lucy Liu (Kill Bill: Volume 1) and the trio portray three private investigators assigned to track down a kidnapped software engineer.

The movie has a strong score of 68 percent on the Tomatometer, but a less impressive 45 percent rating on the Popcornmeter.
Regardless of what some critics might think, Diaz wasted no time in stating her number one: “Charlie’s Angels, of course!”

Cameron Diaz is Back in Action starring in an upcoming Netflix action movie alongside Jamie Foxx.
Cameron Diaz began working alongside Jamie Foxx on the Netflix action comedy in 2022 – around a decade since her last film was released.
Diaz last starred in 2014 musical release Annie, similarly alongside Foxx. The movie began shooting in 2013 and was released the following year, with Diaz reported as beginning work on Back in Action in 2022, with the film landing on Netflix later this week.
The upcoming release subsequently marks nine years since Diaz was actively working on a set and 11 years of viewers not seeing her on the big screen.
And what a return the 52-year-old is making, returning for an action comedy alongside Foxx aptly titled Back in Action no less.
The film sees Diaz take on the role of Emily and Foxx the role of Matt – a couple of elite spies who vanished from the CIA 15 years ago who decide to live a normal life and start a family. But how long will their cover last and what will happen to their family when it gets broken?
While Diaz is obviously not an undercover CIA agent, the parallels between her and her character Emily are stronger than you may think.
She took a similarly extended break but from the acting world – speaking to Variety about feeling like she ‘had to do [something] to reclaim [her] own life’.

Actively working in the industry for over 20 years, Diaz needed a break and when she resolved to take a breather from her career, she reflects she ‘just really didn’t care about anything else’.
Diaz continued: “Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have.
“It really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.”
However, fans are very much thrilled by the news Diaz is back on our screens, flocking to the trailer Netflix shared earlier today (January 14) to weigh in on the upcoming release.

“Welcome back Cameron Diaz,” another added.
A third commented: “Damn! She’s back! I’ve missed Cameron Diaz!”
“So Cameron Diaz back to acting after 10 years and the movie called Back In Action? Got it,” a fourth wrote.
And a fifth resolved: “Cameron Diaz after a long time.”

Cameron Diaz has revealed she ignores one basic rule of human hygiene that will shock a lot of people – but she has a very good reason.
The 51-year-old is one of the most recognised faces in Hollywood after many stellar film appearances over the years.
And while she may be best known for starring in the likes of Annie, Sex Tape and Gambit, she’s taken a bit of a step away from the spotlight in recent years.
In the past, Diaz has opened up about her skincare routine, revealing the one basic rule of human hygiene that the actor decides to ignore.
Opening up to Michelle Visage on her BBC Rule Breakers podcast back in 2022, Diaz admitted she was embracing her new side of life away from the fame.

“The last eight years, girl – I’m like wild. I’m like a wild animal, like a beast!” she joked.
Beforehand, the star found herself falling victim to ‘all the societal objectification and exploitations that women are subjected to’, particularly in Hollywood.
Constantly comparing herself to others, Diaz said it was ‘hard not to look at yourself and judge yourself against other markers of beauty‘.
And in 2022, Diaz decided to ditch the out-dated beauty standards in favour of being more comfortable in her own skin.
That even means forgetting to wash her face.
“I literally do nothing. I like never wash my face,” the A-lister revealed. “Twice a month if I’m lucky, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, I better put this on. One time works, right?’ Like is that all I have to do? I’m just not in that place right now like where I put any energy.”

The Holiday star recalled sitting in front of a mirror every day having make-up applied, describing the whole ordeal as ‘toxic’.
“You just start to pick yourself apart,” Diaz explained. “And you’re like, ‘Why I am sitting here like being so mean to myself?’ My body’s strong, my body’s capable.
“Why am I going to talk down to it? Why am I going to be mean to it when it’s like carried me this far?”
Diaz is finally over those toxic beauty standards, as she simply ‘doesn’t care’ what she looks like nowadays.
“I don’t care. Literally, the last thing I think about on a daily basis – like maybe not at all during the day – is what I look like,” she said.

Netflix users have claimed one particular psychological thriller on the platform is an ’11/10′ thanks to all of its twists and turns.
There’s nothing like a psychological thriller to keep you on your toes, and Netflix is absolutely full of them – so how do you find the best of the best?
One person took to LADbible’s Netflix Bangers Facebook page to get other people’s opinions on this question, asking for recommendations on the ‘best psychological thrillers’ packed with ‘twists after twists’.
Lots of suggestions came flooding in, but it was one 2020 movie that viewers have rated ’11/10′.
Starring Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb and Mehcad Brooks, among others, the film was directed by Tyler Perry and follows the story of a woman named Grace Waters, who’s left disheartened when her husband has an affair.
Following their divorce Grace feels a new spring of hope when she finds a new romance and quickly gets married, but it’s not long before secrets start to worm their way into her life, and Grace ends up becoming violent.
Speaking about the movie with NBC Chicago, Perry said: “As a writer I like to let the character speak to me as I’m writing this story because I disassociate when I’m writing. This
is the story that Grace told me in my head, and I just wrote it and followed it.”

The director also opened up about his decision to release the movie on Netflix, saying he wanted ‘everyone around the world’ to be able to see the movie at the same time when it first released in January 2020.
Titled A Fall From Grace, the psychological thriller has been praised for keeping viewers guessing.
Discussing the film on X (formerly Twitter), one person commented: “‘A Fall from Grace’ on Netflix has one of the craziest plot twists I’ve ever seen.”

“EVERYBODY NEEDS TO WATCH ‘A FALL FROM GRACE’ on Netflix,” another Twitter user wrote.
And a third added: “A Fall From Grace is a MUST watch on Netflix!”
“A Fall From Grace on Netflix 11/10,” someone else commented.
Fox shared thoughts on her character’s behavior in her interview with NBC, describing how betrayal leads her to ‘self doubt’.
“She didn’t lose her sense of longing for love, but she did lost her sense of discernment and fell victim to a predator,” she said.
A Fall From Grace is available to stream on Netflix now.

Christopher Nolan is widely considered one of the most impressive and captivating movie directors of the modern age.
The director has been so far sweeping the awards ceremonies with his latest film Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer won a whole host of awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Picture at the Golden Globes and also napped Best Director at the Critic’s Choice Awards.
Like any film lover, Nolan has his particular favorites – and if you were expecting any of them to be superhero blockbusters, then I’m afraid you will be disappointed.
However, some of the films mentioned might be ones you enjoy just as much as the famed director.
That being said, some are so old that I hadn’t even heard of them or their reputation – so we are all in for shockers:
20th Century Fox
Heat (Michael Mann, 1995)
Speaking about how he tackled the mammoth task of bringing Batman back from oblivion with his Dark Knight trilogy, the director praised Michael Mann’s Heat for its scope, saying it’d influenced him to make ‘Batman Begins as big as we could make it’.
“One of the biggest epic films I have ever seen is Michael Mann’s Heat. That is a true Los Angeles story, just wall-to-wall within the city. Okay, we’ll make it a city story,” he added.
Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1984)
Same with bringing Batman back to the big screen, Nolan also found a similar issue with re-creating the city of Gotham.
So he took inspiration from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner in order to make the city feel as real as possible.
“Blade Runner is actually one of the most successful films of all time in terms of constructing that reality using sets,” Nolan explained.
“With Batman Begins, I immediately gravitated toward the visual treatment that Ridley Scott had come up with, in terms of how you shoot these massive sets to make them feel real and not like impressive sets.”
Warner Bros
Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927) and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (Fritz Lang, 1933)
While Batman Begins was successful, it would pale in comparison to critical acclaim the follow up, The Dark Knight, would receive – which gave us Heath Ledger’s mesmerising performance of The Joker.
Part of the ideas that went into the character was inspired by the German expressionist film Metropolis by Fritz Lang and his The Testament of Dr. Mabuse film.
Nolan gave both films significant praise as he stated Metropolis is a ‘key touchstone’ and said The Testament of Dr. Mabuse is ‘essential research for anyone attempting to write a supervillain.’
Warner Bros
2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968)
As Nolan often delves into sci-fi there is no surprise he has taken inspiration from 2001: A Space Odyssey – most notably for his 2014 film Interstellar.
While I love Nolan’s sci-fi thriller I will have to admit, I still haven’t got around to watching A Space Odyssey.
It’s on my to-watch list though I promise.
“You can’t pretend 2001 doesn’t exist when you’re making Interstellar,” Nolan has said.
He also added that he ‘didn’t doubt [Kubrick’s] world for an instant”.
The Right Stuff (Philip Kaufman, 1983)
While the space sci-fi genre may not be as big as it once was, there are still plenty of films to draw inspiration from.
The Right Stuff was so good that Nolan claims that he insisted all the crew watch it ahead of filming as he deemed it almost ‘perfect’.
“The other film I’d have to point to is The Right Stuff,” Nolan said.
“I screened a print of it for the crew before we started because that’s a film that not enough people have seen on the big screen. It’s an almost perfectly made film.”
20th Century Fox
Speed (Jan de Bont, 1994)
Now this entry surprised even me – but it seems even Nolan can appreciate a dumb 90s adrenaline-filled action thriller.
Speed has a simple concept – Keanu Reeves must defeat a terrorist who has concocted a plan that means if a public bus doesn’t maintain a certain speed it will blow up.
Nolan has called it a ‘ticking-clock nail-biter’ and was able to employ this same dread, anticipation and tension for his World War II film in Dunkirk.
Chariots of Fire (Hugh Hudson, 1981)
For Dunkirk, Nolan also took inspiration from British classic Chariots of Fire to create the perfectly tense atmosphere using sound and visual splendor.
“The visual splendour, intertwined narratives, and aggressively anachronistic music of Chariots of Fire combined to create a masterpiece of British understatement,” Nolan has said.
20th Century Fox
Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962)
Nolan also praised David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia for giving a slightly different experience at the movies compared to at home and said ‘the very subtle shadow detail and the particular tonality of skies’ emerge much sooner on a 70mm screening than a digital version.
For his own work, Nolan has long said that his films are shot for the movie screen and for the best experience, fans should see them in the cinema.
And it’s hard to disagree with him because seeing some Nolan’s flicks on the big screen certainly is something.
