Lily-Rose Depp’s audition tape for her leading role in Nosferatu has surfaced online and it’s causing quite a bit of controversy.
The American gothic horror remake of the cult classic OG 1922 movie, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which is itself based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 Dracula novel, has caused a stir ever since it hit movie theatres on Christmas Day.
It boasts an impressive 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with critics lauding it a ‘behemoth’ of horror and seduction with some rather uncomfortably repulsive scenes, to say the least, as any good vampire movie should.
Bill Skarsgård frightened audiences with his depiction of Count Orlok, particularly as he looks entirely unrecognisable in a moustache and prosthetics – and not to mention the infamous prosthetic penis.
Set in the 1830s in Germany, the story follows a young woman, Ellen Hunter, played by Lily-Rose Depp, who pleads to a ‘supernatural being’ to relieve her loneliness and ends up pledging herself to him for eternity.
There are some rather racy scenes as Ellen becomes gripped by dreams of the demon and derives sexual pleasure from the harrowing figure haunting her nightmares.

Now, the 25-year-old’s audition tape for the role has been released and it’s fair to say it’s dividing opinion.
As the daughter of Johnny Depp and the French singer and actress, Vanessa Paradis, it’s unsurprising Lily-Rose appears the natural choice for such a gothic role – and her audition tape shows exactly why producers hired her on the spot.
The 13-second clip shows Lily-Rose, filming herself over Zoom, with bedraggled hair and mascara down her face.
She delivers some lines from the script in various dark and haunting tones, from whispering to shouting in a matter of seconds.
The viral footage has provoked fans on social media who describe her performance as a possessed Ellen as award-winning and simply ‘good f****** acting’.

Others on Twitter said Lily-Rose is clearly a talented actress in her own right, and in some scenes ‘out-acted her own father’.
“She didn’t just rely on her father’s name – her effort speaks volumes”, another fan wrote, while others suggested ‘talent runs in the family’.
Another penned: “This is a work of art.”
However, others said the clip made them feel ‘uncomfortable’ being so intimate, as one wrote: “The shot needs to be wider.”
Another critic said: “Her acting in the movie was legit good. This audition was painful to watch. I suppose directors can see through this, as she was stellar in the movie.”
Well, the tape also apparently left a profound impact on director, Robert Eggers, and the casting team and videographer who were all reportedly moved to tears by her performance, reports Tribune.
Eggers described it as ‘incredibly braw, raw and powerful’.

Critics from Discussing Film have since said her performance in Nosferatu was ‘breathtaking’ and ‘the film’s beating heart’.
The review added: “Depp goes above and beyond as she contorts her body in freakish ways during moments when Ellen succumbs to Nosferatu’s influence, making way for a more visceral and unforgettable viewing experience.
“Undoubtedly, Depp delivers the latest addition to the hall of greatest modern horror performances.”
When she first saw the finished film, Lily-Rose told Harpers Bazaar: “Oh my God! It’s not just scary, it’s gross, it’s revolting. It’s palpably effective.”

Demi Moore is no stranger to being in the spotlight, but this time fans are actually struggling to keep their eyes on her.
Ghost, Indecent Proposal, G.I Jane – these are just a few of the titles that have captivated Moore’s fans over the years, so it’s no surprise that many were excited to see her back on the big screen in her latest project.
Starring as a ‘fading celebrity‘ (the synopsis’ words, not mine), Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, who’s fired from her TV show for being too old.
Desperate not to let her stardom slip away, Sparkle decides to take a black-market drug, which is capable of creating a younger, more ‘perfect’ version of herself.
The ‘new’ Sparkle emerges from a slit in the older Sparkle’s back – like a horrifying reverse Alien – but needless to say, things don’t go quite as planned.
Margaret Qualley stars as the younger version of Sparkle, who must stay alive by injecting herself with a serum from the original’s spine.
The movie arrived in the US on September 20 to rave reviews, earning a score of 90 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Writing for The Australian, critic Stephen Romei commented: “This is a film unlike any other you will see right now. It will not be to everyone’s taste. For this reviewer, who craves originality, it is a winner.”
Romei appears to have hit the nail on the head by saying the film, which is titled The Substance, will ‘not be to everyone’s taste’.
In other responses from viewers, the movie has been described as ‘wild, crazy, [and an] insanely gory rollercoaster’, and many have admitted they couldn’t cope with watching the entire thing.
“Ewww wtf did i just walk out of before it ended,” one viewer commented, as another added: “Went to see The Substance last night and we had to walkout for the last hour. Just too gory for me! Seeing where the rest of the plot went I think it was the right call…”
Many film fans couldn’t make it through the full movie (X)
Another viewer gave an insightful indication about the impact of the movie as they commented: “The Substance should have audience cams in every screening where you can take away a printed pic of your face on a keyring like they do on Disneyland rides lol.”
Those are some pictures I’d want to see.
But while the movie might not be for everyone, those who enjoyed it made clear they really enjoyed it.
“Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are both phenomenal in this film that has SO much to say. It definitely is not for everyone but I highly recommend it if you love body horror/horror in general,” one viewer wrote.
I suppose there’s only one way to find out if the movie is for you – The Substance is in theatres now.

The team behind Terrifier 3 has revealed one employee’s reaction to viewing ‘first look’ footage from the film.
If – for some reason I cannot comprehend – you’ve already made your way through the top 20 horror movies according to science and are craving more skin-crawling content, then how about a horror film so horrific it left a member of the team struggling to watch it?
Watch the trailer if you dare:
Despite not being set for release for a good few months yet, the anticipation for Terrifier 3 has already been building.
Earlier this year, director Damien Leone took to Twitter to reveal the team had ‘just filmed one of the most insanely horrific scenes of the Terrifier franchise’.
It was even revealed that lead actor, David Howard Thornton (who plays the role of the Art The Clown), reportedly found some scenes so awful he ‘couldn’t handle it on set’ and subsequently nearly threw up.
And apparently it wasn’t just hard for those starring in the movie to film the scenes, but members of the team involved in distributing the film too. One member of the film’s distribution team, Signature Entertainment, had a particularly hard time when looking over the ‘first look’ footage.
Terrifier 3 is set for release in October later this year (Signature Entertainment)
Signature Entertainment took to Twitter on 18 July to share a clip of a member of the UK team’s reaction after they ‘witnessed a first look at footage’.
The black and white video shows an employee wincing and then covering her eyes with her hand, turning her face away from the screen and peeking back to get another glance now and again.
However, it doesn’t take long for her hand to fly from her mouth to her eyes as she really struggles to watch, jolting away from the screen every now and again. Whatever is on screen is clearly too much for her to see, so, will you be able to hack it?
Signature Entertainment’s caption adds: “She’ll never be the same again. Experience what she saw & more only in cinemas 11 October.”
The video is truly the only advertisement the movie needs and people have been flocking to the comments to weigh in.
One Twitter user said: “Hyped hyped I wanna see the footage now.”
“My eyes are going to bleed with how much I love what I’m seeing,” another added.
A third commented: “Bro is going ham in this movie! Cannot wait.”
And a fourth resolved: “BRING… IT…ON.”

Helena Bonham Carter is facing backlash online for defending JK Rowling and Johnny Depp.
Bonham Carter starred in the Harry Potter film franchise based on novels by JK Rowling as Lord Voldemort trainee, Bellatrix Lestrange.
The 56-year-old has also worked with Depp in multiple films directed by Tim Burton such as Alice in Wonderland (2010), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) and 2005’s Corpse Bride.
Both Rowling and Depp have been embroiled in controversy in recent years – Rowling facing accusations of transphobia and Depp allegations of abuse amid a publicly broadcast defamation trial with ex-partner Amber Heard.
Despite the scandal enshrouding Rowling and Depp, Bonham Carter has since spoken out in the pair’s defence.

In an interview with The Times, Bonham Carter voiced the opinion that ‘Johnny certainly went through it’.
The 56-year-old accused Heard of having gotten on ‘that pendulum’ of the Me Too movement.
“That’s the problem with these things — that people will jump on the bandwagon because it’s the trend and to be the poster girl for it,” Bonham Carter said.
She stated she believes Depp has been ‘completely vindicated’ and is ‘totally fine’ now.

On whether or not JK Rowling deserves to be cancelled, Bonham Carter branded the backlash the author has faced as ‘horrendous’ and ‘a load of b***ocks’.
“I think she has been hounded. It’s been taken to the extreme, the judgmentalism of people. She’s allowed her opinion, particularly if she’s suffered abuse,” Bonham Carter continued. “Everybody carries their own history of trauma and forms their opinions from that trauma and you have to respect where people come from and their pain.”
The actor resolved not everyone has to agree on everything because that would just be ‘insane and boring’ and that Rowling wasn’t ‘meaning it aggressively’ but just ‘saying something out of her own experience’.

Bonham Carter believes the backlash Rowling has faced is simply a result of jealousy.
She said: “If she hadn’t been the most phenomenal success, the reaction wouldn’t be so great. So I think there’s a lot of envy unfortunately and the need to tear people down that motors a lot of this cancelling. And schadenfreude.”
Bonham Carter also disagrees with other Harry Potter stars having publicly addressed the controversy surrounding Rowling, resolving she doesn’t ‘agree with talking about other famous people’.

Bonham Carter has since faced her own backlash online for her defence of Depp and Rowling.
One Twitter user said: “How ignorant must one be to insinuate that survivors speak out against their abusers to be a poster for anything. It’s sad and harmful.”
“Helena Bonham Carter i am extremely disappointed,” another wrote.
A third commented: “Dear helena bonham carter i love you with all my heart but could you just go back to hibernating please.”

Bonham Carter resolved her controversial opinion by questioning: “Do you ban a genius for their sexual practices? “There would be millions of people who if you looked closely enough at their personal life you would disqualify them.
“You can’t ban people. I hate cancel culture. It has become quite hysterical and there’s a kind of witch-hunt and a lack of understanding.”
