‘Revolting’ footage of freshly cut meat spasming after having salt put on it is turning people vegetarian

If you were considering dropping meat from your diet for good in the near future, then this video might tip you towards finally taking the plunge into vegetarianism.

As of last year, it was said that around six percent of the US population described themselves as vegetarian, with four percent said they were pescatarian or vegan, Statista reported.

Vegetarianism is thought to have gone up a percentage from 2023 to 2024, and it’s unlikely that that figure will be dropping anytime soon.

Some people opt to ditch meat products for environmental purposes, while others may do so for ethical reasons.

There’s also the idea that a vegetarian diet is healthier than an eating meat, but you have to ‘tread carefully’, Stanford Medicine warned back in 2019.

For whatever reason you’re possibly considering going veggie, this ‘revolting’ video may help you in your decision.

In a clip that was shared online in 2023, a freshly cut piece of meat that had salt added to it is seen convulsing.

The controversial video has been shared on several different social media platforms, sparking people to share their thoughts.

“Omg that’s revolting,” one person said.

“Coulda went the rest of my life w.o seeing this [sic],” said someone else.

Others spoke of wanting to go veggie after seeing the clip.

One wrote on Instagram: “Am becoming a vegetarian.”

“Well, this picture could make me give up eating meat,” a different person penned elsewhere.

But why did the meat move in such a gross way?

Apparently ‘the sodium in the salt triggers still-functioning neurons in the meat, causing a cascade of muscular contractions’, Instagram page @conceptsjpg explained.

Dr Myro Figura expanded on this in a TikTok video, saying: “The central nervous system might be gone, but the peripheral nerve endings are still there. It’s the sodium that activates them and causes the muscle to spasm.

“This only happens with really fresh meat, and with no oxygen or blood supply it does not last long.”

Meanwhile, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has a whole page explaining ‘post-slaughter factors affecting red meat quality’.

The AHDB explains: “Following slaughter, the supply of blood to the muscles ceases, and any remaining energy is used up. This is commonly seen as muscles twitching/tensing. Once this energy is depleted, muscle proteins begin to bind during a process referred to as rigor mortis.

“The pH of living tissue is around 7. When the animal dies, the energy within the muscle is used up and causes the pH to fall to around 5.4– 5.7 (the ultimate pH).”

People are flocking to social media in horror over a ‘weird and terrifying’ video of what happens to muscle in meat not long after the animal has been killed.

If you’ve been debating going veggie or vegan but needed a final push then it seems you’ve come to the right place.

A video shared to Twitter by account Weird and Terrifying shows what happens when you ‘add salt to freshly cut muscle’.

The clip shows someone holding up a slab of meat to the camera – with the meat doing a similar movement to Ron’s face after he attempted the slug-vomiting charm on Malfoy but ended up cursing himself instead in Harry Potter.

The meat bubbles and twitches as if the animal is still alive and it’s not taken long for people to weigh in on their thoughts.

One Twitter user said: “Well, this picture could make me give up eating meat.”

“Glad I gave up meat 21 years ago,” another wrote.

A third commented: “That is weird and terrifying”

A fourth added: “I could’ve gone my whole life without seeing this s**t but naaaahh ofc Twitter.”

And a fifth resolved: “I’ve just ordered a salad.”

But why did the meat move in such a ‘gross’ way?

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has a whole page explaining ‘post-slaughter factors affecting red meat quality’.

Oh, and this can also have an affect on how the meat tastes as well.

The site explains if the animal is ‘stressed’ up until when it is killed, ‘they use up energy through an adrenaline response’.

“This means that once slaughtered, there is not as much energy available and the pH does not fall as much, typically remaining higher than 5.7,” it continues. “This also has an impact on the meat quality, causing a term referred to as DFD (dark, firm, dry) or DCB (dark cutting beef).”

Well, you learn something new – whether you want to or not – everyday. Sorry, meat lovers.

Vegan restaurant forced to close after furious customers attacked it for putting meat on the menu

Vegan restaurant forced to close after furious customers attacked it for putting meat on the menu

The Californian restaurant introduced meat on the menu last year – to much backlash from vegan customers

A vegan restaurant chain has been forced to close for good following furious customers criticizing them for putting meat and cheese on the menu.

Sage Regenerative Kitchen & Brewery closed down on Sunday (January 5), with both its restaurants in Echo Park and Pasadena, California, ceasing operations.

The restaurants were co-owned by Mollie Engelhart and her husband, Elias Sosa.

The owners told Eater that the business had been financially suffering, having been behind on rent and taxes by 2023, so the couple looked for ways to pump more money into the restaurants – even going so far as to selling their California home.

In May 2024, they decided to create more business by introducing meat and cheese to the menu for the first time.

The meat products were produced using ‘regenerative farming’, which, according to The New York Post, is said to have less impact on the environment than traditional farming methods.

Engelhard told Eater: “I thought maybe we could merge these two things, my restaurants and my passion for regenerative agriculture, and come to some new pathway.”

However, this decision faced a lot of backlash from vegan diners and animal rights groups.

Customers flooded to review sites to leave a critical comments about the restaurant, with one person claiming on Yelp that they were ‘sure y’all lost a lot of your vegan base when you added meat’.

Protesters also showed up at the restaurant, with one protest causing the restaurant to close early, FOX 11 Los Angeles reports.

This ultimately led Sage back to where they’d previously started, with Engelhart telling Eater: “Now we just find ourselves in the exact same position, deep in debt and unable to make payroll, bouncing checks to vendors.”

She continued: “I think that Sage closing is a reflection of how disconnected we are from our food systems,” adding that it was a ‘sad victory’ for those who’d protested against the menu change.

On January 2, Sage announced their closure on Instagram, writing on the social media site: “It is with a heavy heart that we close the chapter on Sage.”

The statement continued: “We all poured our passion into shifting the concept to regenerative agriculture, but despite our efforts, we find ourselves in the same predicament today.

“Sunday, January 5th will be our final day of service. We invite you to visit us during our last week. Thank you for 14 incredible years of support.

“With love from the Sage family, Mollie & Elias, we say goodbye.”

With the restaurant’s closure, Englehart and Sosa are focusing on their regenerative farm in Texas, Eater reports, with Englehart adding: “I hope that customers choose farmers, choose local, and choose the highest quality ingredients.”

She also said that she was ‘incredibly grateful to have been able to serve the LA community for so long’.

UNILAD has reached out to Sage Regenerative Kitchen & Brewery for further comment.

A man whose Pepsi addiction lead to him drinking a staggering 30 cans of the stuff a day has revealed the shocking effects it had on his body, as well as his bank account.

Andy Currie would start every day with a litre of fizzy pop and would drink a further nine litres throughout the day.

“I’ve always loved the taste of a cold Pepsi. Nothing could beat it and I just got hooked,”Andy, from Bangor, Wales, confessed.

“I work nights so always liked the sugar rush to keep me going. I’d go through four or five two litre bottles of Pepsi every day.

“Because I work at Tesco I could just buy it straight after work and take it home.”

‘It cost me a fortune’

Andy would spend a whopping $25 a day on Pepsi, which racked up to around $8,500 a year on his favourite drink.

“It cost me a fortune to be honest. I could have bought a car every year for the same amount I was spending on Pepsi,” he admitted.

“I just needed to have it, as soon as I woke up I’d go to the fridge and pour myself a large glass of Pepsi and just carry on through the day.

“I remember going to weddings and birthdays and while other people had glasses of champagne I’d be toasting people with a can of fizzy pop.”

Andy’s health began to deteriorate after his Pepsi consumption got out of control, and it got to the point where the Brit topped 19 stone and was at risk of developing diabetes.

While he managed to lose two stone through a strict diet, Andy was still struggling to quit drinking Pepsi for good.

‘It became a poison and a crutch to him’

It was London-based therapist and hypnotist David Kilmurry who Andy got in touch with as a result, and he saw results almost instantly.

“David met me online and hypnotised me for about 40 minutes,” Andy said.

He continued: “I don’t know what he said but afterwards I just didn’t want to drink it anymore.

“I’ve still got two cans of Pepsi in my fridge which I was going to have before the session but didn’t have time.

“I prefer water now. My wife Sarah says my skin looks better and I’ve got so much more energy.”

David said: “I was horrified at Andy’s disclosure of drinking 10 litres of Pepsi a day.

“That was by far the worst sugar addiction I’ve ever heard of.

“Resigned to addiction, Andy was overweight, anxious and struggled to get his words out because he was so breathless.

“It became a poison and a crutch to him. Since working with him I am delighted to see him drinking water and healthy drinks.”

Horrifying moment raw ‘zombie’ meat ‘crawls off’ restaurant customer’s plate as people scream

Horrifying moment raw ‘zombie’ meat ‘crawls off’ restaurant customer’s plate as people scream

The horrifying video of the ‘zombie meat’ quickly went viral, but there is a scientific explanation

Picture this. You’ve sat down at a nice restaurant for some grub when your food begins moving.

I mean, it’s the last thing you want to see before delving into some nice food, but the reality for one hungry individual.

Watch the moment some meat appeared to crawl right off the plate below:

There are many complaints you can make at a restaurant, whether it be poor service, to the quality of the food.

However, your food having a mind of its own and deciding to leap off the plate is not one of them.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the above viral video instantly saw people making comparisons to the world of the undead.

While the meat may have been twitching on the plate, a zombie apocalypse is not on the horizon just yet, so you can put your survival kits away for now.

Nonetheless, people on the internet have been left spooked out by the video, while the girls in the background can be heard screaming.

I mean, can you blame then?

Certainly unexpected. (Facebook)

Certainly unexpected. (Facebook)

If I was sitting down to enjoy some grub and my food suddenly jumped out off the plate then I’d be left pretty freaked out too.

Thankfully, there is a pretty simple explanation to the shenanigans and fortunately it’s not because ‘the dead have risen’.

The reason why the piece of meat has decided to make a run for it is apparently due to it being a fresh cut.

Add that to the fat the flesh is being exposed to salt, the meat is almost certainly going to twitch as the diners experienced.

The exposure to salt makes the muscles contract even though it’s no longer living.

As a result, the meat flops around, freaking many people out in the process.

While it was never confirmed where you can buy such food, many pointed out the footage may have come from a diner that does something called ‘ikizukuri’.

The phrase may sound pretty complicated, but it simply means an establishment where live seafood is prepared.

This process can also be applied to frogs, though eating fish is certainly more common across the globe.

While it’s now thankfully confirmed the movement is not due to some kind of paranormal activity, it’s still not particularly appetising to have this taking place on your plate.
