Disturbing X-ray shows body infested with tapeworms after major kitchen mistake

A disturbing X-ray has been shared on social media, showing what a body infested with tapeworms looks like.

Sam Ghali, of the University of Florida, uploaded the photo on X, calling it one of the ‘most insane X-rays I’ve ever seen’.

It is possible that the individual may have made an unfortunate mistake in the kitchen that led to the parasites camping inside their body.

Known as cysticercosis, the infection can be caused by eating raw or undercooked pork that’s been contaminated with tapeworms, or also via transmission.

What is cysticercosis?

The parasitic infection is ’caused by the larvae (immature worm) of the tapeworm, Taenia solium’, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“A person gets cysticercosis by consuming tapeworm eggs. These eggs hatch and develop into larvae,” they explained.

“The larvae then penetrate (move through) a person’s intestinal wall and move to tissues like muscle, eyes, or brain. This is where the cysts, or cysticerci, develop.”

In the video, Ghali said that the person may have caught cysticercosis from eating undercooked, or raw pork.

However, the CDC clarified that ‘cysticercosis does not spread from eating raw or undercooked pork’ alone, the pork needs to be infected with cysticerci to begin with.

They added that humans can only get the infection if they consume food or water contaminated with tapeworm eggs.

What happens if you get cysticercosis?

“These cysts can travel anywhere throughout the entire body, heavily to the muscular and soft tissue of the hips and the legs,” Ghali said.

“If just in the pelvis, they don’t pose a life-threatening problem.

“The problem is if they travel to the brain and lodge there.

“That can cause very serious issues. As you can imagine, that can lead to neurological symptoms like headaches, confusion, seizures and even death.”

How to avoid cysticercosis

Unfortunately, if you consume pork that has been infected by cysticerci, and it’s slightly undercooked, then there’s not much you can do about it.

But one thing you can do is keep your kitchen as clean as possible to avoid it spreading.

“Poor cleanliness or sanitation can spread tapeworm eggs to others through contaminated food or water,” the CDC added.

“Living with someone with a tapeworm raises the risk of developing cysticercosis.

“People with tapeworms can infect themselves with eggs, leading to cysticercosis (autoinfection).”

Sadly, those who live in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are more at risk due to ‘unimproved sanitation facilities,’ defined as an area ‘where there is no separation of human waste from human contact’.

Woman who ate nothing but fruit for 30 days reveals the unusual impact it had on her body

Woman who ate nothing but fruit for 30 days reveals the unusual impact it had on her body

The American tried a fruit detox for 30 days, and experienced a number of positives

A woman that took it upon herself to eat nothing but fruits over the course of 30 days has shared the effect it had on her body.

Shade Martin is a New Yorker who decided to put herself through the unique diet, making the decision after getting intense shoulder pain that physical therapy and medical drugs didn’t help.

Upon reading that alkaline fruits, such as mangos, berries and bananas, can have anti-inflammatory properties, the American decided to change her diet to exclusively consist of the natural foods.

The 36-year-old only had watermelon for the first seven days, followed by grapes for six, with other fruits coming in for the remaining 17 days.

What changed after having a fruits-only diet?

Martin found that she had more energy than normal because of the slower release of natural sugars, also finding that she could think clearer.

As well as this, she admitted that she lost 10lbs (4.5kg) in weight, and that she had almost no period cramps.

It should be noted that she is already a vegan though, having done numerous juice cleanses in the past, so other people may have different results.

But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for Martin, as she admitted that she started coughing up large amounts of phlegm when she only ate grapes, as she admitted: “It just continued to come out… It just blew my mind.”

In addition, she started going to the loo for number twos a lot more, something that was expected due to the high levels of fibre, though it may have been a small price to pay as her skin also drastically improved.

What was it like to experience the changes?

Speaking in a Q&A with health influencer Gillian Berry, she opened up on her lack of period cramps: “I had little to no pain. On a scale from one to ten, it was a one to nothing.”

She also said that her cycle was ‘extremely light’, but it was longer than usual.

As for her ‘extra glowy skin’, she said that the detox allowed toxins to emerge from her skin, with pimples first appearing on her forehead before enjoying the result of skin that looked and felt better.

What did she eat, exactly?

After starting with watermelon and grapes, she enjoyed a plethora of fruits for the remaining two-and-a-half weeks.

Martin would usually start her day with lemon or lime water, followed by a large smoothie which included bananas, blueberries, cherries, and dates.

She also removed set meals, snacking on pieces of fruit instead, though she said it was hard to see her husband and daughter enjoy ‘normal’ foods around her, needing to distract herself to avoid craving anything.

Martin also claimed that the reason behind low fruit consumption is that people wrongly believe that it contains too much sugar.

“We need fruits, fruit should not be limited in our diet,” she highlighted.

“There’s just such a misconception that this is what causes all these health issues and diabetes but yet, we don’t want to bring up the unhealthy fats.”

She insisted that we need to remove ‘refined sugars’ from our diet, and that fruit is key for ‘brain power’ as well as ‘body energy and strength’.

Doctor who switched to 80% ultra-processed food diet for 30 days revealed shocking before and after results

Doctor who switched to 80% ultra-processed food diet for 30 days revealed shocking before and after results

Dr Chris van Tulleken was curious to discover the true effects of ultra-processed food on his body

A doctor chose to consume a mostly processed food diet over the course of a month to see exactly what it did to his body.

Dr Chris van Tulleken is no stranger to taking on experiments to do with food, all in the name of science.

The medic previously went on a different diet to his identical twin brother in order for them to compare results and has advised people to avoid ultra-processed food for their long-term health.

The experiment

Dr van Telleken undertook the test for 30 days for the 2021 BBC doc What Are We Feeding Our Kids?.

He prefaced the experiment by explaining that his normal ‘healthy diet’ consists of 20 percent ultra-processed foods, moving to the 80 percent ultra-processed food diet as one in five Brits eat like this, regularly.

Dr van Telleken wanted to see if this change would impact his health, though his experiment was monitored by ‘one of Britain’s top obesity experts’, to ensure scientifically valid results.

Feasting on meals such as fried chicken, microwave lasagne, stuffed crust frozen pizza, oven chips and fast food among other things.

The doctor noted that he continued to eat ‘when he felt hungry’, though as time went on, he found that this feeling came around more often than before.

Reading the ingredients on the packaging on some of his new meals, Dr van Telleken quipped: “What am I tasting? What are they trying to get me to taste, and how does this all feel in my mouth?”

Dr van Telleken also revealed that he was struggling to poo, even going 48 hours without a bowel movement.

Before he knew it though, the 30 days were up and it was time to see the results.

The results

The before-and-after photos showed that he had clearly gained weight over the course of the month, and that’s not all.

His weight increased by 6.5 kg within the four weeks, while his Body Mass Index (BMI) went up by two points, making him overweight, while his body fat also increased by three kilograms.

Dr van Telleken explained that at that rate, he would have gained six stone (38 kg) in just six months.

Moving onto brain activity and hormone levels, the obesity doctor highlighted that his hunger hormone went up by 30 percent, which explained why he constantly felt hungry despite eating a lot, as well as a decrease in the ‘fullness’ hormone.

The way the doctor’s brain worked changed too, as scans revealed that new functional connections were made in his brain as a result of the diet.

He explained: “Comparing these scans has revealed that my diet has linked up the reward centres of my brain, with the areas that drive repetitive, automatic behaviour.”

Dr van Telleken said that essentially, eating ultra-processed food was something his brain was telling him to do, despite him not necessarily wanting it.

Both medics shared their worry for children in the UK who may eat the same diet, though their brains are much more malleable than his.

As nice as a cheeky fried chicken or frozen pizza may be, it might be best to lay off the ultra-processed scran for a bit.

Restaurant customers left screaming after horrifying moment 'zombie' meat 'crawls off' dinner plate

Restaurant customers left screaming after horrifying moment ‘zombie’ meat ‘crawls off’ dinner plate

Yes, it’s real – but there’s a good explanation behind it

Jess Battison

As fun as it might seem at first, sometimes there is nothing more annoying than when you just want to eat your meal but it comes with an unnecessary faff.

Like, just give me my burger, I don’t need you to fill the table with dry ice or light a ring of fire behind it.

And having the actual food doing the messing about seems like a next level.

But when this ‘zombie’ meat ‘crawled off’ a dinner plate, it wasn’t a weird stunt by the restaurant and the horrifying moment had customers screaming in a viral clip.

Yep, it literally seems to move about and throw itself off the table and onto the floor.

Thankfully, it wasn’t the first sign of the zombie apocalypse, but it has absolutely freaked people out.

The science behind the ‘moving meat’

There’s a good explanation for all of this that isn’t ‘the dead have risen’, and even if it was the beginning of the end, you’d be quite glad that patient zero was a chunk of meat with no ability to bite anything.

As for why this particular cut of meat appears to have continued twitching after death, it’s apparently because it’s a fresh cut of flesh being exposed to a lot of salt.

It twitches about on the plate. (Facebook)

It twitches about on the plate. (Facebook)

Snopes did a bit of a fact check on this and it seems the neurons were still active in this chunk of meat, meaning it reacted to the sodium ion that can be found in salt and soy sauce.

Yeah, like some kind of science experiment on your dinner plate.

So, the exposure to salt makes the still existing muscles in the meat contract even though it’s dead, allowing the meat to appear as though it’s still alive and flopping around like a zombie.

It’s also suggested the meat we could see in the video had come from a frog, so no wonder it was hopping mad about having been killed and plated up.

Plus, it could be that this footage came from a restaurant doing something called ‘ikizukuri’, where live seafood is prepared.

A great leap for freedom. (Facebook)

A great leap for freedom. (Facebook)

It’s normally a process for fish, but it can be done for frogs as well.

So there you have it, this actually could have been precisely what happened to make it seem as though the ‘zombie’ meat was actually moving.

There’s no free will left here, just the rote mechanical triggering of mechanisms soon to decay into uselessness and be consumed to grant some other being a scant few hours of energy before it must consume again.

I’ll just have my meal without the science, thanks.

Major mistake people make to get yellow teeth even if they brush them twice a day

Major mistake people make to get yellow teeth even if they brush them twice a day

A lot of people make this same mistake, which can ruin the enamel on your teeth and turn them yellow

Joshua Nair

There’s a huge mistake that people are making when it comes to brushing their teeth, and it could save your smile for years to come.

We all know that the way a smile looks can massively change someone’s appearance, so when you find your teeth getting yellow – even though you’re brushing twice a day – it can be very frustrating.

Despite this odd occurrence, many people end up having their teeth whitened regardless, to give them that shiny new smile – but what if you want to keep it natural?

Why do teeth go yellow?

The most common reason behind teeth going yellow is ageing, and as much as you want to fight it, this is unavoidable according to Didsbury Dental Practice.

Unless you want to get them whitened, your teeth will turn yellow even if you are incredibly attentive to them, say experts.

The enamel protecting your teeth wears away as time goes on, making your teeth more susceptible to staining.

Some people have less enamel on their teeth in general, meaning that their teeth will become yellow quicker than for those with a thicker layer.

As well as this, factors such as oral hygiene, diet, smoking and medication can affect how easily stained your teeth are – but, what is the common mistake that people keep making that is ruining their gnashers?

What is causing teeth to go yellow quicker?

After eating breakfast and having your coffee, you might rush to brush your teeth to get the taste of it all out of your mouth, but it turns out that this may not be the smartest move.

In fact, you should wait at least 30 minutes before brushing or flossing your teeth, as doing it too soon after could actually make your situation worse.

It pushes the harmful acids further into our teeth, which explains why dentists usually recommend soft toothbrushes rather than medium or hard ones, as those can brush your enamel away.

In fact, dentists recommend that you brush your teeth before eating breakfast, as the bacteria that builds up in your mouth overnight will feed on the sugars of breakfast.

But what are the main factors that can affect the colour of teeth?

Food and drink

When it comes to diet, certain foods can cause your teeth to turn yellow by sticking to your enamel, with acidic drinks such as coffee or tea also giving the bacteria in your mouth a naturally staining acid that can harm your enamel and bind the colour to your teeth.

Other foods such as fruit juices, bread, cereal, and pastries, are damaging to your teeth, so the bottom line is that it’s crucial that you brush your teeth before breakfast to avoid discolouration.

Oral Hygiene

Brushing and flossing twice a day is crucial, and can lead to plaque build-up, once again damaging the enamel on our teeth.

Smoking

Smoking is already harmful to our lung and heart health, though it does unsurprisingly also impact the mouth.

Tar and nicotine from tobacco can attach themselves to enamel and cause your teeth to turn yellow over time.

Medication

Certain medication can cause yellowing of the teeth, so it’s always best to look at the list of side effects before using certain medicines.
