Netflix has eight-part series that can be watched in any order and it will affect how you view the story

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have a series with a tense build-up to a big, shocking finale.

But there’s something in the freedom of being able to watch a show in whatever order you want. And Netflix has an eight-part series that’s perfect for that rule-breaking thrill.

Unlike its other smash hits with the recent Missing You or Black Doves have a standard flow for binging, this one can be watched in any order with a different impact on how you view the story.

Spanning 25 years, Kaleidoscope follows a group of experienced thieves who attempt to break into a vault for a $7 billion payday.

Each episode is named after a different colour, and spans from 24 years before the heist to six months after, meaning you’ll be jumping about different time periods.

The Eric Garcia led project is based on a sort-of true story, as he explained: “After Hurricane Sandy, $70 billion worth of bonds got flooded in the basement of the DTCC, which is a large clearing effort that’s owned by a bunch of the big banks.

“To my mind, I was like, ‘Well, that’s a perfect coverup for a heist!’”

Kaleidoscope offers viewers a ‘unique immersive experience’.

Executive producer Russell Fine said: “When you watch Kaleidoscope, all the information is there to be able to connect the dots and know the story.”

Garcia added: “Being able to move around and watch different orders gives you a different viewpoint on the characters. There are questions that are going to be asked in one episode that are answered in another episode.

“Similarly, there’ll be answers in an episode that you’re watching that you don’t even know are answers to something until you see the question when you watch another episode.”

The series stars Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito, Paz Vega, Rufus Sewell, Tati Gabrielle, Peter Mark Kendall, Rosaline Elbay, Jai Courtney, Niousha Noor, Jordan Mendoza, Soojeong Son and Hemky Madera.

But with a 45 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it suggests that you’ll either love the series or absolutely hate it.

Some viewers think it’s ‘excellent’ while others say it’s ‘unimaginative’.

“So much potential but such a mess,” said one who couldn’t get onboard with ‘jumping back and forth in time’.

The anthology TV series can be watched in any order

A film writer has shared the best way to watch a non-linear Netflix series that can be seen in any order.

The eight-episode Netflix show spans 25 years and follows a group of experienced thieves who attempt to break into a vault for a $7 billion payday.

And in 2023, the streaming service shared the Eric Garcia-led anthology series on the platform, starring the likes of Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, Paz Vega, Rufus Sewell and Tati Gabrielle.

(Netflix)

(Netflix)

Titled Kaleidoscope, the beauty is that you can watch each episode in no particular order.

So, if you watch an episode and aren’t a fan, that has no baring on the rest of the series.

In theory, sounds pretty decent right?

The director said the plot is based on a sort-of true story, explaining: “After Hurricane Sandy, $70 billion worth of bonds got flooded in the basement of the DTCC, which is a large clearing effort that’s owned by a bunch of the big banks.

“To my mind, I was like, ‘Well, that’s a perfect coverup for a heist!’”

Executive producer Russell Fine said: “When you watch Kaleidoscope, all the information is there to be able to connect the dots and know the story.”

What order should you watch it in?

Now, if you want to go against the grain and would like to know what the ‘best order’ to watch it in would be, film critic Keith Phipps (@kphipps3000) has got you.

Writing for Vulture, Phipps suggested that the order he wished he watched it in would be: “’Yellow’, ‘Violet’, ‘Orange’, ‘Green’, ‘Blue’, ‘Red’, ‘Pink’, ‘White’.”

Keith explained: “Here’s how I wish I’d watched Kaleidoscope: ‘Yellow,’ in which Leo assembles his ragtag team of misfits (which includes Paz Vega, Rosaline Elbay, Peter Mark Kendall, and Jordan Mendoza), is absolutely the best place to begin the story.

The beauty is that you can watch each episode in no particular order. (Netflix)

The beauty is that you can watch each episode in no particular order. (Netflix)

“The episode introduces all the major characters while leaving some details of their past and why they’re on the team in the first place in the shadows. It’s brisk and intriguing.

“Start there, then alternate “Violet” and “Green,” the two flashback episodes, with “Orange” and “Blue,” episodes that move the story toward the heist chronologically.

“Then watch “Red” and “Pink,” two episodes set in the aftermath of the heist. They’ll be a bit confusing but just the right amount of confusing.

“Then let “White” fill in the blanks and, ta-da, you’re ready to watch whatever’s next in your Netflix queue.”

The non-linear show can be watched in any order and still make sense

Claire Reid

A new Netflix series can be watched in any order, which will give a completely different viewpoint on the story. Speaking as someone who always falls asleep during a Netflix binge-watch this sounds like a bit of a godsend.

The non-linear anthology series centres on a heist and has eight episodes each named after a colour, such as Pink, White, Yellow and Green. You can get a first glimpse of the show here:

Kaleidoscope spans 25 years and follows a team of masterful thieves who attempt to break into a seemingly unbreakable vault to get their hands on what could be the biggest criminal payday in history.

But of course, with high reward comes high risk and the team must first get through the most powerful corporate security team in the world and the FBI.

Interestingly, the show’s creator Eric Garcia says it’s loosely based on a sort-of true story, confused yet?

He explained: “After Hurricane Sandy, $70 billion worth of bonds got flooded in the basement of the DTCC, which is a large clearing effort that’s owned by a bunch of the big banks. To my mind, I was like, ‘Well, that’s a perfect coverup for a heist!’”

Kaleidoscope lands on the streaming platform in January.

Netflix

Unlike your usual crime series, where the events play out in a pre-ordered fashion, Kaleidoscope offers viewers a ‘unique immersive experience’ – so you may choose to start with the episode titled Yellow, while others may choose to kick off with Green and regardless of which you choose you’ll still be left with a story that makes sense, clever, eh?

Executive producer Russell Fine said: “When you watch Kaleidoscope, all the information is there to be able to connect the dots and know the story.”

The eight-episodes span from 24 years before the heist to six months after, so depending on which episode you watch, you’ll be jumping into the crime at a different point in time.

The show has a non-linear format so it doesn’t matter which you order you watch them.

Netflix

Garcia added: “Being able to move around and watch different orders gives you a different viewpoint on the characters. There are questions that are going to be asked in one episode that are answered in another episode.

“Similarly, there’ll be answers in an episode that you’re watching that you don’t even know are answers to something until you see the question when you watch another episode.”

The series stars Giancarlo Esposito, Paz Vega, Rufus Sewell, Tati Gabrielle, Peter Mark Kendall, Rosaline Elbay, Jai Courtney, Niousha Noor, Jordan Mendoza, Soojeong Son and Hemky Madera.

If you’re keen to give it a watch, Kaleidoscope lands on Netflix on 1 January.

Netflix viewers who loved Black Doves urged to watch BBC series dubbed ‘The Crown meets Mad Men’

The series originally aired over a decade ago

The past few months have seen quite the mix of banging series dropped onto Netflix that we’ve spent the cold nights binging rather than going out.

From the sequel to Squid Game to the latest Harlan Coben, Missing You, we’ve been pretty well treated. And of course, before those two hits, Black Doves landed on Netflix.

Many viewers were absolutely hooked on the thriller with the likes of Keira Knightley, Sarah Lancashire and Ben Whishaw as it sits at a whopping 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

So, if you loved that, fans are encouraging a BBC series to binge next dubbed ‘The Crown meets Mad Men’. Now that’s an intriguing description.

It aired on BBC Two back in 2011 and 2012 and also stars Black Doves actor, Whishaw. The show was created and written by Abi Morgan who also came up with the very popular series, The Split.

Also starring the likes of Vanessa Kirby, Dominic West and Peter Capaldi, it has a decent 88 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer.

Set in a 1950s BBC newsroom, the show – called The Hour – follows renegade journalist Freddie (Whishaw), producer Bel (Romola Garai) and anchor Hector (Dominic West) as they create an investigative newsmagazine show.

However, when the three become embroiled in a love triangle, passions and tension rise.

This then all plays out against the backdrop of a mysterious murder as Freddie takes on a ‘controversial and dangerous’ investigation.

Collider said this period drama has all ‘the ingredients you love about The Crown’ while it was previously compared to being similar to Mad Men.

And with the same star appearing and the themes of bureaucracy and spycraft, it’s said to be the perfect recipe for a binge to follow Black Doves.

On X, users called The Hour ‘brilliant’ as one said it ‘was cancelled way too soon’ despite its ‘stacked’ cast.

Others hailed it as ‘really good stuff’ as they praised Whishaw’s performance in the ‘under-appreciated’ series.

Plenty of people are shocked by it being cancelled as one wrote online: “Just watching this on Netflix. I totally fail to understand how the BBC axed this well acted, beautifully written and intelligent drama with such an incredible cast.”

“What a fantastic show. I just found this recently, and after completing both seasons, I am scratching my head wondering, how the hell did this ever get cancelled,” another added.

You can watch The Hour on Netflix now.
