Netflix viewers can’t wait as one of best rated horror films fans have ‘watched five times over’ is finally added

Horror fans are in for a treat as one of the top-rated movies of the past seven years is set to join Netflix.

Sometimes, there’s a fine line between films, from the genre being spine-chillingly memorable or forgettably cringeworthy.

But this psychological horror – dubbed an ‘instant classic’ – wowed audiences and critics alike when it released in 2018.

Written and directed by Ari Aster, the ‘harrowing’ tale was a box office hit and has grossed $82.8 million worldwide.

Distributed by none other than A24, the film centers on grieving mom-of-two Annie Graham (Toni Colette), who is dealing with the loss of her own mother.

Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro star as her children, Peter and Charlie, while Gabriel Byrne is their father and Annie’s husband, Steve.

Just days after her mom’s funeral, Annie and her family become the target of increasingly sinister occurrences both in and outside the home.

And in the most twisted ways imaginable, the haunting truth about Annie’s ancestry eventually comes to light.

The movie we’re talking about is, of course, Hereditary.

The movie joins Netflix in the US later this week – although some viewers were so spooked by Hereditary, they might be reluctant to watch it again.

Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, one fan admitted the film was ‘so visceral and terrifying’ that they’ve only been able to watch it twice.

Another brave individual, though, managed to stomach it ‘five times,’ writing: “I love this movie…if you like creepy slow burning stuff check it out!”

Meanwhile Rotten Tomatoes critics, who’ve scored the movie 90 percent, said in their consensus: “Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits.”

The discussion continued over on Reddit, where fans are still heaping praise on the movie years later.

Hereditary opened the doors to a new age of psychological horror that changed the standard for how a horror movie should be produced,” one social media user declared. “Ari Aster brought together beautiful camera work, believable dialogue and reactions, and an unapologetic descent into loss, madness, and fate.”

A second wrote: “I couldn’t agree more. My favorite horror movie of all time.”

A third chipped in: “It’s an instant classic in modern horror for sure and it deserves all the accolades it gets.”

Hereditary begins streaming on Netflix from Wednesday January 15.

Horror film with ‘insane gore’ so terrifying it unlocked ‘new fear’ amongst viewers added to Netflix

Horror film with ‘insane gore’ so terrifying it unlocked ‘new fear’ amongst viewers added to Netflix

The film is unlocking a new fear

Michael Slavin

A horror film with ‘insane gore’ was so terrifying that viewers went as far as to say it unlocked a ‘new fear’ – and now anyone with a Netflix subscription can hop on the couch and get that new fear.

Spoilers ahead…

Horror films done right can be an absolute literal nightmare – and unlock new fears your brain hadn’t even comprehended before.

Take the Final Destination franchise, the King of this trend.

I personally had never thought about how terrifying it was to drive behind a truck full of logs before until I watched the second film of that series and saw someone flattened.

Now am I regularly driving behind a truck full of logs? No.

Is that still one of my greatest unrealised fears? Yes.

The film in question is a horror movie that itself is part of an iconic franchise, and has the reviews to prove it.

Alongside a superb 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans raved about the film – it made a whopping $149 million at the box office off a budget just under $20 million.

It was added to Netflix this week, shooting up to number two in the US, behind only The Garfield Movie (which is terrifying in its own right).

Here’s the trailer for the horror:

The film in question is Evil Dead Rise, the fifth instalment of the Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell franchise.

The film’s synopsis reads: “A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.”

If you’re wondering what caused people’s newfound phobia, it’s a scene in the film that utilises kitchen utensils in a … let’s say creative way.

During one section of the film one of the lead characters, Bridget, is possessed and begins going after her aunt, Beth.

She proceeds to grab a cheese grater and scrape it down her calf in an attempt to get her.

The moment led to shocked reactions online, with one posting: “I’m usually a pretty quiet movie watcher, but the moment in Evil Dead Rise involving a cheese grater had me actually screaming. Lee Cronin, you’re pretty f***ed up, good job!”

Another said: “Evil Dead Rise synopsis: cheese grater fear unlocked”.

A third said: “Lee Cronin understood the damn assignment. Creative kills, unique household items used as weapons, practical effects body horror, manic laughing deadites and circus-level contortionism.”

Reviews have been largely positive for the film since it was added to Netflix, with one fan posting on Twitter to say: “Evil Dead Rise starts off slow and then refuses to take its foot off the gas.

“Insane gore and terror all of the way through mixed with incredible performances all round.

“Definitely a must-see for horror fans.”

Horror fans are just realizing these 'must-watch' films are all on Netflix

Horror fans are just realizing these ‘must-watch’ films are all on Netflix

Are you really a true horror fan if you haven’t seen these three releases?

Poppy Bilderbeck

Poppy Bilderbeck

There are three ‘must watch’ movies on Netflix US which you’ve got to see if you’re a true horror fan.

The reason people enjoy horror films so much defeats me. The scariest film I can muster myself to watch – and still very much through fingers clenched over my eyes – is Coraline.

However, if there’s nothing you love more than snuggling down on a Friday evening with a takeaway to get the living daylights frightened out of you, then there’s three horror movies which you’ve got to have seen to classify yourself as a true fan of the genre. So, in no particular order:

Annabelle

A user took to LADbible Facebook Group ‘Netflix Bangers‘ to reveal their top ‘must-watch’ horror movies and first up available to watch in the US is Annabelle.

The 2014 release is truly the stuff of nightmares. You may’ve thought the tales of dolls you shared at childhood sleepovers were scary enough, but this film written by Gary Dauberman and directed by John R. Leonetti brings them to life.

Prequel and spin-off to 2013 release The Conjuringthe film sees a doctor give his pregnant wife a porcelain doll, however, after a traumatic event, the doll can no longer be looked upon as a sweet gift.

“This movie made me reconsider my choice of watching horror movie,” a Facebook user said.

Creepy dolls? It's a no from me.

Home for Rent

The 2023 release sees the tenants of a home start terrorizing the home owners of the property.

The horror has achieved a solid audience score of 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

social media user wrote: “Nice horror. watching it now.”

Malignant

And the final film to be suggested by another horror fan in the comments section is Malignant.

Directed by James Wan, the film sees a woman’s terrifying visions not stay simply as visions.

Starring Peaky Blinders’ Annabelle Wallis, The Finder’s Maddie Hasson and George Young, the movie achieved an average audience score of 52 percent but officially fresh Tomatometer score of 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Oh, and if you’ve already seen all those, congratulations, you’re a true horror fan, but can you make it through a horror which has seen viewers forced to turn off their TV after barely making it three minutes in? Or there’s Netflix series Haunted or Dead of Summer to add to your ‘To Watch’ list too.

Horror fans, listen up; there’s a new series on Netflix that fans are hailing as a ‘must watch’.

It’s probably not advised to watch a whole horror series in one sitting (because, you know, nightmares and stuff), but fans are loving this Netflix series so much that they’re binging it in just 24 hours.

And the series is fresh on the platform, having only landed on Netflix on Friday, April 5.

Titled Parasyte: The Grey, the series’ synopsis reads: “People must rise to combat unidentified parasites after they violently take over human hosts and gain power.”

The six-episode show is based on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, Parasyte.

Despite having only just been released a few days ago, people are already raving about it.

Taking to Facebook page Netflix Bangers, one person called for people’s honest reviews of the series.

“Just watched it in one day,” one person replied. “I loved it!”

Echoing similar sentiments, a different fan said: “Just watched in 1 day and I love it!”

Parayste: The Grey has gone down a storm with viewers.

Another went on: “Just finished. It’s a must watch.”

Someone else pointed out that, while they enjoyed the series that they’ve since finished, it left them ‘awake all through the night’.

Elsewhere, with it being based on the anime series of the same name, someone else urged people to watch that first and then the live-action series. The cartoon is available to stream on Hulu.

Just days after its release and Parasyte: The Grey is already in Rotten Tomatoes‘ 100 percent club.

Meanwhile, it has an 80 percent audience score.

One reviewer said: “As a horror series, Parasyte: The Grey is superb. As sci-fi, it’s exciting. But more importantly, as an adaptation, this is a showstopper.”

It has 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.

Rotten Tomatoes

Ahead of the series’ release, director Yeon Sang-ho spoke about wanting the Netflix show to coexist alongside the manga version.

“To me, [the manga] Parasyte is about coexistence,” Yeon told Netflix. “So I wanted Parasyte: The Grey to echo this theme. I questioned whether people could peacefully coexist with other organisms or mutants unlike themselves.”

As to where the ‘grey’ part of the title came from, Yeon went on to explain: “The original work talks about the theme of coexistence, and we wanted to delve into that [idea of] coexistence between people, human beings, and parasites.”

He added: “And the lead character, Su-in, is also in the grey area between the human world and the parasite world.”

Parayste: The Grey is now streaming on Netflix.

Abigail review: Horror comedy heist thriller is one of best vampire films in years

Abigail review: Horror comedy heist thriller is one of best vampire films in years

Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens lead a team of cons who face off against a vampire ballerina

Simon Fearn

When was the last time you saw a properly good vampire flick? 2022’s Morbius, obviously.

But in all seriousness, it’s been a long time since we’ve had anything in the same ballpark as Near DarkThe Lost Boys or Dusk Til Dawn.

Abigail is not quite in that league, although it’s head and shoulders above most of the vampire offerings in the last five or ten years.

Is it scary? Not particularly. Does it bring anything radically new to the table? Nope. But are you guaranteed to have a good time watching it? Absolutely.

Abigail is the latest feature from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the guys who resurrected the Scream franchise after Wes Craven’s passing.

The cast is chock full of genre favorites. The Guest’s Dan Stevens! Scream’s Melissa BarreraFreaky’s Kathryn Newton! Giancarlo Esposito doing his reliable crime boss schtick!

Tragically, this is also one of Euphoria actor Angus Cloud’s final films before his death – and the movie is dedicated to him.

We meet them as they’re about to kidnap the titular Abigail in a scene that’s thrilling but cursory.

She’s the daughter of a very wealthy man who – the team hopes – will shell out $50 million to get her back.

Once they’ve bundled her into a canvas bag and hole up with her in a massive Gothic pad – is this really the most lowkey safe house you could find, chaps? – the film treads water.

Alisha Weir is a centuries-old vampire (Universal)

Alisha Weir is a centuries-old vampire (Universal)

We’re treated to some thumbnail sketches of the team’s backstories – none of which really matters – with the talented cast not given much to do until they’re called on to be decapitated/exploded/chewed to death.

There are some fake out jump scares. Tempers start to fray. You know the drill.

Once Abigail – who unfortunately for the team, turns out to be a centuries-old vampire – bares her fangs, the movie finally kicks into gear.

Earlier jokes were hit and miss, but now the cast land zinger after zinger. There’s double crossing, triple crossing. Literally gallons of blood. A hilarious and surprising scenery-chewing cameo.

Stevens and Barrera truly understand the assignment here – the former a neurotic former cop with a nasty streak, the latter the emotional center of the movie/the only character who isn’t a complete arsehole.

Freaky's Kathryn Newton stars (Universal)

Freaky’s Kathryn Newton stars (Universal)

It’s kind of in the spirit of 1985’s Fright Night – silly rather than scary, but very, very fun.

Abigail doesn’t reach the heights of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s breakout hit Ready or Not, which had some satirical bite to accompany its blood-soaked horror comedy.

But as a studio horror movie that’s often surprising and always a tonne of fun, it definitely delivers – especially with a dearth of quality vampire flicks to sink your teeth into in recent years.
